Project Chile History
Wright State University (WSU), Dayton, OH and the Corporación de Desarrollo y Energía (CDE) started the Project CHILE program in 1994 with funding from the Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education's (FISPE) comprehensive three-year program. In the past there was a one-quarter preparatory period at WSU prior to expatriation to Chile. Students were required to participate in two courses offered by WSU: (1) International Trade Management and (2) Chilean Culture and Commercial Spanish while developing an international trade plan for their host companies. Students then entered the intensive Spanish language program through the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) in Santiago, Chile for a period of one semester. In 1996, the National Security Education Program granted WSU funding for two years under its institutional program. In order to expand the program to allow more students as well as more companies to participate, WSU invited USAC to collaborate on the program and develop a new model that would accommodate students from all over the US. Over the past four years, 14 students from six universities have participated in the program.
